With regards to the Nina storyline, I felt it was very empowering for Nina to discover her new powers, and for her to make the choice to help the Fjerdans, but her perspective was hard to read at times because she was still grieving for Matthias. Other old favourites include Genya, David, Tolya, and Tamar, who it is nice to meet again. “ Face your demons… or feed them”Īnother surprising aspect was Zoya Nazyalensky, another old character, whom I did not originally like much nevertheless, I found that her character grew on me, particuarly once she reached her true potential at the end He is the perfect example of a king with many faces, someone who puts on a front for his country while he slowly suffers for them. My favourite character from the original Shadow and Bone series – Nikolai Lantsov – was explored in more depth in this novel, and it was entertaining but also heartbreaking to read from his perspective. However, I found that King of Scars did not live up to my high expectations of it, which made for a slightly disappointing read.ĭon’t get me wrong, I did enjoy the book for the most part. The combination of Leigh’s beautiful writing style and some of my favourite characters from the Grishaverse made this novel my most highly anticipated of the year – particularly after the masterpiece that is Six of Crows. He will risk everything to save his country and himself. Going into this book, I thought I would love it. With the help of a young monk and a legendary Grisha Squaller, Nikolai will journey to the places in Ravka where the deepest magic survives to vanquish the terrible legacy inside him.
